SPORT:
rule-bound physical competition contrived as a microcosm of virtual significance |
Sport is an arena of contrived conflict, wherein transient rule-bound events of physical rivalry are
staged in a froth of cosmic significance.
Such artificial activities function as further microcosmic environmental
opportunities, for large numbers of humans to exercise a wide range of their evolutionary characteristics.
Innumerable skirmishes are continually cycled as events.
The natural prowess of diverse individuals is emphasized and rewarded, and all are seduced
by the prospect that they have an opportunity to win a trophy of grotesque uselessness and
try the top of a fame and financial pyramid for size.
Spectators are encouraged by being provided with an entertaining displaced meaning to
life, and as always, the generals and financiers in the background negotiate the spoils.
Being a transposed caricature for war, all the accoutrements of armed conflict are in evidence,
including rules, uniforms, goals, booty, greed, medals, honours, deception,
and all the various peripheral structures of supporters, espionage and historical museums.
As on any field of battle, appealing to a hypothetical god to take sides is frequently resorted to,
but since there are few recorded responses to such requests, pleading for a miracle
is usually the final desperate course of action.
From a participants point of view, sport provides an ecological niche wherein battles can be fought,
enhancing drugs trialled, fame and fortune acquired, and an immortality of trivial inconsequence attained,
usually without having to be killed in the process.
From the spectators viewpoint, sport is an appealing microcosm wherein a set of comprehensible rules of
conflict provide a delusion of law and order.
When the real universe intrudes with its capricious weather, pitch, or participant injury,
the consequences are usually benign, and any loss can be laughed off at the end of the event.
From the journalist and media perspective, the appeal of conflict has been successfully projected
into the animal security of the human lair, where the aggrandizement of the sport serves to manufacture
commentary celebrities by exposure and to siphon fabulous monies into the piggy-banks of promoter generals.
From the perspective of the pragmatic gardener,
the adulation afforded certain individuals for hitting,
throwing, bowling or kicking a ball-type object so that certain artificial constraints are adhered to
is a complete waste of available weeding time.
Running, jumping, riding or skiing the fastest or furtherest, just does not measure up to the
skill and dedication demanded in growing the largest pumpkin in the known universe.
Technological innovations have resulted in an ironic reversal of presentation promotions.
Cameras taken out into military combat zones, have been able to show the extent
to which war can be presented as a sport.
Ultra high speed cameras are now able to replay the finest detail of events
recorded during an armed encounter, and judge for themselves whether the
leaders and adjudicators were justified as to the decisions they made.
